Fireplaces
Fireplaces are strictly for ambience and relaxation. Most
fireplaces, whether masonry, or manufactured, have low heating
efficiencies, only from zero to 15%. The reason is: when a fireplace is
burning in an 1800 sq. ft. home, it will remove every cubic inch of air
from that house in about one and one-half hours. The replacement
outside air leaks in around the doors, and windows, and has to be
reheated.
In older homes, it is usually more fuel-efficient to install
fireplace inserts into originally built open fireplaces. These inserts
come in wood or gas-fired models and a great variety of styles from
traditional to modern. Most feature glass fronts which minimize smoke
and fire hazard from open flame and popping cinders.
When buying a manufactured fireplace, buy one from an established
manufacturer, with a long history. Manufactured fireplaces will
eventually need replacement parts, and when you need one 18 years from
now, it is good to know that part will still be available.

below. We also suggest you look at our wood and gas-fired stoves. Many
of our stove models are glass-fronted, and furnish more heat than a
typical fireplace while providing the comfort of a flickering flame.
