Hargrove and Empire gas logs are of two types-- vented and vent-free.

Heatilator and Valor are our direct vent products and are UL listed as space heaters. These space heaters transfer heat at 80% efficiency.

What are Vented Gas Logs?

Vented gas logs look the most authentic, however the price for delivering a realistic flame and flame pattern is that they produce a large amount of carbon monoxide. Due to the presence of this toxic gas, the fireplace damper has to be locked in the partially open position, losing heat value.

What are Vent-Free Gas Logs?

These logs are attractive and have nearly a 99% efficiency. They produce a lot of hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide. You will have an elevated moisture content in your home when using vent-free logs. They are not recommended for people with respiratory problems. We recommend partially venting these logs unless a power outage occurs and heat is needed. In that event, the damper can be closed and the heat released directly into the room.

Direct Vent Gas Stoves and Gas Fireplaces

These fireplaces and stoves are our choice of gas products. The direct vent gas stove or fireplace brings combustion air in from the outside, and vents the exhaust gases to the outside. These heaters are considered a closed system, and many can even be installed in a bedroom. They will still operate and produce usable heat during a power outage.
